Technology and learning: How schools will be revolutionized by technological advancements

We can positively say that technology has made a clear impact on most aspects of our daily life. We now communicate, work, build new worlds and ideas through advanced technological tools.   Sociologically speaking, education may be one of the sectors least affected by technology. While computers may have been introduced as early as 1975[1] by donations made by Apple, we’re still far from taking full advantage of technology in the classroom.

That’s when the SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) model makes an appearance. "SAMR, a model designed to help educators integrate technology into teaching and learning, was developed by Ruben Puentedura, Ph.D. The model aims to enable teachers to design, develop, and integrate digital learning experiences that utilize technology to transform learning experiences to lead to high levels of achievement for students."

SAMR is a framework for technology integration in the classroom; it is comprised of different levels that act sequentially.

Level Function of Technology Possible Application

Substitution Technology is a substitute Students may be able to print out a worksheet, and deliver it when they finish.
Augmentation Technology is a substitute but provides more functionality Students may be able to deliver a paper directly to their teacher through Google Docs and receive almost immediate feedback.
Modification Technology redesigns a whole part of the task. Students may prepare and give a speech online in front of a live audience.
Redefinition Technology works to create a whole new part of the task. Students may connect with people around the world.

This technological approach to education can introduce younger generations to a more dynamic and fulfilling way of learning.  This new approach will definitely rejuvenate our educational models and may also provide students with the opportunity of becoming familiar with tools they may need to use professionally later in life.  With the use of SAMR, schools will be able to deliver personalized education to most of their students so no one is left behind.

While technology may be a great resource, it is important to consider that it isn’t the answer to all the problems surrounding quality in education.  Like all technologies, SAMR will deliver results only if educational institutions, teachers, parents and governments all around the world can stand behind and support the project.
